Nostalgia of Steam and Sail

This is excellent Alan , I share your love of the subject and this is particularly good.

Excellent Alan. Caught my eye right off. Great palette and a lovely left side composition. Top work as ever.

Very good, has a Turnerish feel.

Superb (as always)

Beautiful. I love the way everything just seamlessly comes together.

Absolutely superb, Alan.

Excellent work, Alan. I particularly like your maritime paintings. That cluster of shipping is terrific, and certainly tugs on the nostalgia strings of this old boy.

Full of dazzling light and hustle and bustle Alan. Beautiful.

"Little or no detail' and yet there is! That's just one of the reasons why I find you work so captivating Alan, plus your use of colour. And light. And composition!

Detailed without being detailed. Excellent painting.

I really like the way that the white sail of the barge balances out the darl mass of boats on the left.

Superb Alan, beautiful work and brush strokes.

Lovely “ clean” painting, Alan, - just that beautiful blue and suggestion of other colours.

Very good Alan. Love the colours and just enough detail.

Indeed excellent. I see hints of lots of influences, which all gel together.

Absolutely beautiful Alan- it’s so atmospheric and I love that dot of red on the subject which is reflected in the water.

Thing about detail - now, I do detail sometimes. But you don't have to - because you know just where to put your marks, and you know the human eye will fill in everything we need to make sense of the picture. But you've GOT to know where to put those marks in the first place - and of course: you do.

Oh lovely. Liking the light blue and compostion. Works so well boats all together on left side.

So very atmospheric, Alan and I love the left sided composition. Great work as usual!

Beautiful Alan.

You have caught the scene and its atmosphere so economically. Superb painting.

I agree with all that has been said above Alan, you are an expert at ‘suggestion’. You have some wonderful comments, and they are well deserved. It’s a super piece of art Al!

I love that brushwork in the foreground

Yes I think we are all agreed as to the composition Alan, works very well, and there is a feel of a Turner. Very appealing and restful on the eye.

Really good. I found myself immediately drawn to it, which means it has a rather elusive quality that everyone strives for.

I like how you have focused the detail in a relatively small area and left a lot of the canvas free...and the swirl of cloud and sea giving that circular motion. Definitely Turneresque and absolutely lovely.

Very effective painting, Alan — lovely blue and great brushstrokes.

What a really interesting composition Alan - lovely tones and colour - excellent artwork.

I missed this Alan- what a great composition. I agree with all the previous comments made. A masterful painting.

What a delight!

Fabulous Alan, I admire your ability for superb composition. The peachy touch in the sky really balances the clear blues.

Lovely painting Alan

Absolutely brilliant

Always recognise your paintings and love them.

Purely from imagination with no reference to any particular place - just happens to be a favourite subject of mine, certainly those wonderful Spritsail barges. I’ve kept it loose and painterly, which generally means visual brushstrokes and little or no detail. Oil on board 40 x 50cm
