Excellent, Alan. I particularly like the handling of the trees from the dark masses in the distance to the light against dark behind the farm buildings. And I always like to see a few people in landscapes. I'll have to try that paper.

It's excellent, Alan, in every department. I'm looking closely at the ruddy colours and how they give the monochromatic scene a lift. It's something I've been thinking about for some time and you've generated great atmosphere through their introduction. It's a great example of how a dash of colour can attract the eye immediately. Super scene and super work. Bri

Superb Alan and doesn't it all gel beautifully

Almost makes me wish for the beauty of snow Alan. It's always so cold, clean and unspoiled. You have it perfectly here, nice work.

Makes winter look warm and inviting. Splendid painting.

Really beautiful. Just love the way the light reflects off the snow, and the dark trees. Looking forward to seeing this series.

Great work, can't wait for the snow.

It's a lovely composition Alan, great use of mixed media and I love the lights and darks, will look forward to seeing more 😀

Those bare trees and the light reflecting on the the roof top is just beautiful, Alan.

If you've an appetite for more unalloyed praise, I am most happy to provide it. This is the kind of subject in which Rowland Hilder specialized, and you can see why - it has endless possibilities. The touches of hot colour are wonderful at enhancing the light: the picture glows at you. I do not look forward to the snow, it's broken more than enough of my bones over the years, but there's no denying the magic of this scene.

Lovely Scene Alan and nicely rendered

Lovely, I look forward to seeing your others.

Are you going in for the Christmas card competition?

The creamy white make this piece work very well contrasting with the much darker tone Alan.

This is simply super Alan, I love the touches of red in the trees and elsewhere. A beautiful painting all round.

A very attractive scene Alan, the reds give it a festive feel. I also thought of Roland Hilder's well known Kentish scenes.

Wow, what fabulous contrasts Alan.....a very striking piece!

Well painted Alan, you have created a lovely glow with your superb use of darks and darks. Thanks for the tip on the Strathmore paper I might give it a go.

Eye-catching work - great lights and darks and touches of bright colour.

Wonderfully strong image

What a fabulous response from you all, thank you so much. I always love reading your comments and they do spur me on to keep painting.

Love this, Alan

I can only concur with all the comments you've received Alan, it's a wonderful painting

Love the light on the barn roof and in the near and distant fields, it makes a wonderful contrast with almost black woodlands.

Love it, Alan. The burst of yellowish light up near the silhouetted trees makes it. Now I'll look at what other people have commented.

Just noticed this painting, it was on the home page I must have missed it! Stunning painting with stark contrasts. I have read all comments and agree with every one, love it Alan.

I knew this was your work just from the image posted - such a distinctive style.

16 x 24cm mixed media on 300gm Strathmore Toned Grey paper. A local scene that I have painted plein air in both oils and acrylics on many occasions from a friend’s garden - in all seasons, including heavy snow. This is a little studio sketch that I drew out yesterday; it will form part of a series featuring local landmarks around the surrounding villages. Anything basically that will make an interesting composition, from farm building like this one, to the impressive Sandon Hall perhaps. I have sketched many of these before, but not using mixed media combined with toned paper. All will be based on winter scenes, I much prefer the tracery of the bare trees, and I will be using a very limited palette as in this piece. Started off using FW acrylic inks, watercolour, a touch of acrylic and a tiny scrape of pastel in places. This is lovely paper to work on, thick enough to take a wash, and works well with most medium. Great for pen/brush and ink, which is how I start off most of my sketch
