Rowland Hilder Attempt

Good to have a challenge and it looks very good, Fiona!

This is super, Fiona. Great attempt with in my opinion the right colour palette. Love this!

Well done, Fiona!! Fantastic sky and the water works well

Excellent Fiona! I particularly like your trees and reflections, how did you do them, what did you use?

I think Alan would agree with me, when I say - paint your own picture; don't try to copy, but take what you can from the artists you admire and make the result your own. I've been painting for 55 years, at the last calculation, but I can't paint like Hilder! He was unique - take an example from him, sure - but don't try a full-blown copy, because unless you're a superb copyist (and you wouldn't want to be that, would you?) you won't be able to. Let him lead you on - take him further, in your own style - don't try to emulate his: there's no need! He did that - so you don't have to. I love Hilder's work, but the landscapes he painted have passed away; even if they hadn't, I couldn't re-create them. I doubt that anyone could - you'll never get that unique feeling again, even if you're Alan Bickley! (And if anyone could, he could.)

Well done Fiona, you caught his style here.

Very effective result Fiona, love the sky above and below in the water and the building placed nicely in the third.

Brilliant Fiona, Love it all sky, reflections, water, palette tones and ink work. Super

Lovely work Fiona, can see how you have worked it, but have left a fair bit of 'you' in there too, which I think is a good thing!

This is lovely Fiona. Beautiful 😍

Lovely work Fiona. Sky, reflections, all good.

Looks good, Fiona, love the colours.

Really good Fiona. The water and reflections are lovely

Great job Fiona, love the sky too!

What a great sky Fiona and I do like the limited palette in the landscape.

Really good Fiona.🙂

Tones work perfectly well - this painting has a lovely atmosphere Fiona - whatever you are trying to achieve you have succeeded!

Fiona this is amazing- and your paintings just get better and better- better than Roland Hilders even… And I agree with Roberts comments below.

Another fine work Fiona. Although not drawn to making landscape art myself, I was aware of Rowland Hilder's work from an early age, and particularly liked his penwork and drawings. A master.

Simply superb Fiona.

It's really good Fiona, like it a lot

You’ve achieved some nice passages in this piece Fiona - it hasn’t got the sharpness or control of Hilder’s work, but an interesting exercise so well done!

You can immediately see the Hilder pallette and style Fiona so a successful exercise I’d say

Looks fantastic Fiona. Really beautiful.

Super result, great success.

A very successful attempt at Hilder Fiona, lovely reflections in the water.

Wow! This is one superb painting! No more need be said.

Thank you all ever so much for your encouraging feedback, advice and observations. I appreciate you taking the time to look and comment. A productive exercise, always learn something. Thanks again x

Thank you for answering my question Fiona; I haven't come across chinagraph pencils before. They are really effective; I thought at first that you had used charcoal or pastel. The pencil has worked well on the Arches paper; the trees are especially finely drawn, a really impressive painting. Thanks again.

No problem Karen.

Beautiful and peaceful. Gorgeous colours.

Thanks very much Ellen!

Excellent exercise Fiona, well worth doing.

Many thanks Spencer and George for your valued feedback.

Lovely work Fiona, hope you are keeping well.

Glennis, thank you for you comment. I’m very well at the moment, I hope yourself and your family are well also. It’s lovely to see your wonderful animal paintings/drawings on the gallery again. X

Wow, gorgeous

Thanks Romila!

I really like the atmosphere in this Fiona.

David, thank you very much for your input, much appreciated.

Love work Fiona.

Thank you very much Brian!

12”x10” watercolour and ink on Arches. An attempt at a Hilder painting after reading Alan’s feature in The Artist, not an easy style to follow. I found adding the darker tones in ink and actually getting them in the right place for the composition, difficult. Great feature Al!
