Old trees

So well painted, Paul!

Lovely painting

The misty background is very nicely depicted. May I ask what the red splashes on the ground represent?

Great stuff Paul!

Thank you for your kind comments David, Anne and Lucian. The red spots are the remaining leaves that fell in the autumn, the seem to hold a red, bronze colour for months then suddenly start to decay. Most of the trees in the Chilterns are beech Lucian and are know for there autumn colours, often it’s knee deep in leaves in some places .

Thank you Alan for taking the time to look and comment it’s appreciated.

Wonderful dynamic shapes.

Definitely autumnal. The trees here are changing colour fast. Lovely painting Dixie, I like the old tree trunks.

Beautifully painted trees Paul, you are so good at them.

Excellent Paul.

Magnificent specimens Paul with their silver-ish bark and copper leaves, a perfect painting subject. Are they known as the mother of trees in folklore?

Thank you Fiona for your kind comment. I don’t know if they are the mother of trees but you certainly have got me interested enough to find out .

A4 watercolour , old trees in the woodlands in the early spring morning . Much of the woodlands on the higher hill in the Chilterns have very thin soil a couple of feet at most on some places . Underneath this thin lays is pure chalk with flints , the hills were formed when the sea bed rose due to pressure when the Alps were forming . I have bug down to put I posts etc as much as four to five feet and it was solid chalk .
