A great result Paul! The initial idea of the peeling bark, and the decision to make it into a triptych was inspired! Most impressive and the way in which your work has progressed is great credit to your hard work!

Thank you a Alan for your very kind comment I appreciate it a lot . I found this most relaxing and a pleasure to paint as always a lot of learning to.

Have watched this on the Forum and it's very good indeed

Superb Paul.

Splendid piece(s), beautifully executed and a great idea.

Super, like this Paul, and so appealing. Forgive I had to say that.😜

Superb work, Paul - I like all those subtle colours!

Your bark really does look as if it’s peeling off, very realistic and a great success!

Great observation Paul and such an innovative triptych. Very impressive.

Thank you all for your very kind comments I appreciate them , it’s especially nice getting comments on something that I thoroughly enjoyed doing . It certainly help me get out of the dreaded doldrums and into a better frame of mind to paint again.

Impressive Paul, very well done indeed.

Thanks Lew I appreciate your comment.

I've watched it on the forum Paul. Very impressive piece of work. Well done.

Thank you Denise your comment means a lot.

I know you told us what it is but if we hadn’t known, the imagination could have gone anywhere. What I like particularly is the lovely blue background, it suggests a beautiful day. I’m not surprised you’re pleased, we are all so self critical but when it goes right, as this has done, it’s a great feeling.

I’ve watched this develop on the forum Paul and I think this is one of the best paintings you’ve done. So glad it’s helped you get back your “mojo” and out of the doldrums. Isn’t it great when a painting goes really well- I think that’s what keeps us going.

I have been following this on the forum. It has come together beautifully and you have painted it really well.

A great idea in the first place Paul and the finished piece is outstanding!

This has worked perfectly - it is the very best thing you've ever painted, at least the best thing of yours that we've seen. Excellent work, and you should be proud of it: your eldest daughter's investment in that initial box set of half pans has paid off handsomely. Sometimes, I've thought you were nervous of strong colour, and powerful contrasts - shying away from richer colour. But here, you've achieved what I always thought you COULD achieve, if you would take things in stages, thinking about each one, getting your drawing absolutely right (and sorry if that sounds patronizing!). The drawing is good, the composition is right, the colour is beautifully judged, the botanical details shows you've really studied what you're painting: this is your masterpiece.

Wonderful Paul! I really like this, I’ve been watching its progress on the forum.

Many thanks everyone for your very kind comments I appreciate them and they are a great moral booster . Not sure I can produce another this good just yet need to recharge my creativity I think.

Brilliant result Paul. I do hope that your enjoyment in painting this wonderful triptych gets you out of the doldrums and happily creating again. You now know that you can produce outstanding work.

Beautiful, Paul, a great result!

Thank you Sandra and Jenny for your kind comments.

Lovely piece Dixie. Absolutely stands out

Really well painted triptych Paul. I watched its progression on the forum with interest and now I look with pleasure at it's completion. I love the subject matter and your idea behind it. Well done.

Haven't been well enough to paint or post comments but I just had to comment on this, it is inspired and beautiful !!

You certainly have achieved your goal, Dixie. It was an interesting process to view in the forum. They are all very beautiful, but the panel on the right is a corker. Well done.

Martin, Valerie, George and Carol thank you for you lovely comments, they are encouraging and much appreciated. Hope you feel better soon Valerie.

Beautifully done Paul - the colours you have chosen create a lovely harmony, and I particularly like the semi-abstract look that is developing here.

Paul, I echo all that has been said above….and will just add…I LOVE IT! 😍

Thank you Fiona , with a lovely compliment like yours it certainly made worth doing.

This is proof that something mundane can be lifted into the stratosphere.

Skylar thank you so much for your comment, I do love trying to do something with the mundane things around us .

Really good Paul. We have three peeling birch trees in the garden that are wonderful to look at and very hard to draw/paint. You have captured this tree in all its glory.

John thank you for your kind comment I do appreciate it . Must be nice look out at the different times of year and see the changes to the bark and it colour etc.

This is absolutely amazing, I have been thinking of painting this for a while. You have given me the courage to try it😊, thanks!

Go for it Romila and do let me see the progress. I have it stage by stage on the forum under new project.

Superb Paul, very well detailed and love all the different colours

A3 watercolour of birch tee bark peeling off. Every so often we produce a painting that seems to go right from taping down the paper to taking the end photo this has been one of those . I look at it and thinks it’s just about painted itself, I set this as a challenge to get myself out of the doldrums and back to doing some reasonable work, I think I achieve that goal .

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
