So beautiful, Paul - a real sense of place - excellent!

Oh, I really like that! The tree trunks look very delicate; I like that they almost appear "translucent"...in beautiful contrast to the lush forest floor. Beautiful!!!

Fragile trees and a lovely sense of being in a wood, Paul

That is a real beauty, Paul. Love how you have captured the light and the fallen leaves are so effective.

You've definitely captured that atmosphere very well Paul

You have captured the mist Paul and I've followed on the forum. It's a lovely painting. Keep them coming.

Lovely sense of depth. The woods go on forever!

Thank you all for your kind comments, as well all do at time I had a but of doubt about the misty effect , a difficult thing to paint and get the atmosphere right .

I’ve watched this develop and the methodical approach that you take, has always impressed me. Another really meaningful piece of work Paul, well done! Had it been mine, I would have probably made the foreground trunks a little darker - that would help with the aerial perspective even more… but I’m nitpicking again…

I like this very much, you've definitely got the morning mist. Top work, Paul.

Alan and Lew thank you for your comment. Nitpick away Alan it how we learn and develop our skill, by listening to advice and comments from other artists. I was in two mind about the darker foreground trees , but then thought about how the mist was all around, even things close had a softnesses to them and slightly out of focus look . It is the most odd light effect that’s not experiencing anywhere else in the woodlands, even people who have worked the area for years say it’s strange . I realise that our feelings take over given the place , odd that some dislike it and a few find it quite comfortable.

Very effective, Paul, lovely colours.

This is a beauty Paul and you’ve captured the misty feeling you wanted.

Very atmospheric, Paul, and nicely painted.

Jenny , Christine and Linda thank you for your kind comments they are appreciated.

Yes you have captured the bright light through the mist Paul. A lovely atmospheric piece.

Beautifully painted Paul, I feel like your work is improving so much ( not that it was bad before!) Your progress is inspiring.

That's lovely Paul. I like the depth and misty effect. The forest floor is painted very effectively too.

Super painting Paul.

I do like mysterious woods and this one is gorgeous.

David ,Hillary, Diane , Stephen and Janet thank you for your supportive and much appreciated comments.

One of your best Paul of the ones I have seen.

Lovely airy light and space here Dixie. I’ve walked in woods like this many times

Thank you Martin , it’s always so relaxing and peaceful walking in the woodlands, very different to walking in a park or country lanes etc.

Lovely work Paul, very atmospheric.

Thanks Andrew for your much appreciated comment.

indeed a very good sense of place and very engaging arrangement of trees and atmospheric depth, makes me want to walk deeper

Thank you Federico , it’s a lovely place to walk and I was privileged to be allowed to work there , best office I ever had , what a view as well .

This has worked really well.

Beautiful work Paul, the faded trees at the back create great sense of space and mist!

Romila thank you for your comment, it’s appreciated.

Thank you Cheryl I appreciate you taking the time to look and comment.

The second watercolour in my mini series of Pulpit Hill scenes . This one is on the hill top to the rear of the hill fort ( shown as Camp on maps) , set in the morning mist that often develops in autumn through to spring. Very strange light that a lot of people find very spooky , often comment about feeling watched . Hope I’ve captured the bright light through the mist effectively.

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
