Jairong Lady (14" x 10" approx)
This is the first time that I've tried to do a portrait in watercolour. I have to say that I worked from a photo belonging to a friend, and used proportional dividers to enlarge the portrait to the size I needed. I have a love/hate relationship with proportional dividers, as unless you hold them at exactly the same place, and wrist angle, you can go hideously wrong. What I tend to do is plot the basic distances of prominent features, and then draw by eye after that. The drawing of the hands was so difficult that I ended up squaring up a long narrow box that took in the hands. I also wasn't sure whether to put in a background, but in the end decided I'd enjoy it even if it didn't work. It certainly pushes your drawing skills doing a portrait!
