You caught it just right Fiona. Life in the fifties, and I was there...Lovely stuff .(-:

Thanks Jim. My husband is a Leicester lad, he remembers it too.

Smashing Fiona, you have caught the atmosphere well.

This is total new for you, Fiona, and it is wonderful, great atmosphere too.

Lovely loose and impressionistic Fiona, I think you should step out of your comfort zone more often I really like this one.

Wow so good!

The more i look the more I can pick out Fiona. It certainly has that industrial feel. I like those ghostly looking house in the mid distance.

Many thanks Margaret, Cesar, Barry, Linda, John for your encouraging comments, they are very much appreciated.

It's good to step out of your comfort zone and look you produced a lovely painting, well done Fiona.

Lovely work Fiona. A true watercolour painting..like a breath of fresh air :)

Yes this is pollution, and somehow it has its beauty, you caught it Fiona

Smoky and dirty, you have got it , Fiona. An excellent watercolour!

What a skyline and a sky. A great success in every way Fiona. We should all take up the challenge of "out of our comfort zone". I hate painting buildings or anything mechanical....the problem is, I have to be "turned on" by what I paint.

lol..the smoke filled air doesn't look very fresh here. I meant that it's nice to see a true watercolour painting!

Aylestone road and close by the gas works. Remember getting coke from there - must have been not long after the war (#2) ended). Wasn't there a meadow close bye that they used to flood for skating ? Along side a canal or the R. Soar ?? You are bringing back memories now. 51 years since I left Leicester. I like it.

Lovely painting, creates the right mood of olden days!! great.

Quite brilliant Fiona. Well done.

This is superb, Fiona. I used to live in the shadow of Walsall power station and remember scenes like this. Your very limited (almost monochrome) palette really captures the atmosphere of this industrial landscape.

Very much the scene of the day, asthma in abundance. You've captured it perfectly, Fiona.

A new subject perhaps but instantly recognisable as a Phipps, nicely portrayed Fiona.

Great to see industrial landscapes to balance the cosy rural ones.

Very different subject for you Fiona but you have captured the scene well.

A beauty Fiona great painting

They make great shapes to paint, even if they are an eyesore in every other sense. Turned into a fine painting, admire you also for resisting the temptation to add more colour - this is just right.

Very atmospheric, Fiona. Great colour palette for the subject.

This is ultra fab Fiona. Beautiful steam blending into the sky.

Pete, Dennis, Holger, Satu, Louise....you know I nearly didn't post this I thought it was a real bad job! Especially the bottom right foreground....muddy! I know what you mean Louise, the smoggy atmosphere around the cooling towers is my favourite bit. Thank you all. Thank you Marjorie, no not usually my subject to paint but the sepia photo looked so grubby and atmospheric I had to have a go. I usually avoid this kind of thing and buildings but I made a threat to myself, this year I'm going to try stuff that I don't normally do.....even potraits...arrrrhhhh!!!! lol

Many thanks Bonny, Peter, Henry, Ellen for your kind comments.

Thanks ever so much Alan, Peter, Stephen, Dennis, Sharon, Mia and Carole for your generous feedback.

Yes Mike, Aylestone road. My husband can't remember the name of the field that was flooded but it could have been the cut (canal) or the River Soar, as the river split off to run through some houses with quite a few bends in it where as the cut ran along the side of the power station then joined up with the river at the far end again. I have another photo that I might have a go at, that is looking up the cut/river towards the power station and Walnut street bridge. My husband spent his youth fishing in the cut opposite what they called the 'holes', which were the hot water culverts from the power station. Thank you for your comment, hope you enjoyed a look back down memory lane.

Lovely Fiona, you have caught the scene very well indeed.

Thanks very much David! Haven't seen anything from you for a while, have you given up for the winter?

I'd love to see that in a virtual frame Fiona. I'm betting it would look a treat..(-:

Hi Jim I don't know how to do virtual framing. I have it on the easel at the moment with a black mount around it.

It's very good Fiona very evocative , I love that billowing smoke which creates a wonderful impression

Thanks Dermot!

Fiona, I love this one...it is so atmospheric and imaginative...the limited colour adds to the somber feel of an industrial scene.

16x14 watercolour on Arches. A very loose impression of an industrial scene, not my comfort zone. Taken from an old photo.
