The Old Smithy

Comments

This is superb Fiona , I just love these old buildings ,I imagine the stories they could tell if only they could speak. It’s so nice to see such a lovely painting that’s obviously being done with care a a lot of thought for the subject matter.

This is absolutely gorgeous!

Reminds me of Joan Eardley Fiona - maybe the palette.Good one, I like your oils.

I really like scenes like this Fiona, nice work.

A step back in time Fiona, a lovely painting.

I was reluctant to do this collage to be honest Paul, it was at a small art group I go to…..everyone else was keen to do their own subject. I chose this old photo but it was approached in a haphazardly fashion! Many thank for taking an interest, and your positive comments. Marjorie, I think it’s probably the palette and also how she expressed the mood and grime of the tenements of Glasgow and the cottages at Catterline….maybe?

Just missed you Denise, Russell…….thank you both very much.

That has turned out so well, Fiona!!

I alway seem to home in on your work Fiona...I just so like them. This is no exception.just look at that light...it's fab.

Like the gritty feel to this Fiona. The reds lift the whole painting but all the colours work so well

Nicely done Fiona, excellent colours.

Excellent, very Joan Eardley, Catterline painting.

A very interesting mixed media Fiona. I particularly like the old Smithy building.

Really like your palette Fiona, I think it's worked very well.

I am really pleased that you decided to do this Fiona its a very nostalgic piece of work and is well painted. It also shows your ability as an artist to use your creative powers in different ways from the painting Parting to the above...

Lovely painting Fiona, catching the age and weather-beaten character of the group so well -terrific -love the leaden sky too!

Lovely use of muted colour and textures - just right for this old scene!

Very atmospheric. That roof works so well.

Like this a LOT!

Lovely mixed media Fiona, the houses, chimney stacks and grey sky ,the red tiled roof and telegraph wire looks so effective and the snow laden on the road! Lovely painting indeed!

You've made it look so realistic, as you intended.

You have made a beautiful painting of this Fiona. I like the use of pieces of collage.

Thank you so much to you all for your generous and encouraging comments.

Well, it’s certainly depressed me! Some lovely passages, particularly the first building / the sky is maybe a bit on the grey side… debatable!

Really Excellent Fiona

Thanks Alan, I didn’t think the sky was grey enough! Many thanks David, appreciate your comment.

Lovely old buildings Fiona, the grey sky and the light is very effective x

It’s absolutely superb Fiona- I love it!

Thank you very much ladies, appreciate you taking the time to look and leave your lovely comments.

Atmosphere captured perfectly Fiona.

Shaun, thank you for your lovely comment.

Oops how did I miss this one? Just saw it on the banner. I agree with many of the previous comments, atmosphere, history and grim times well captured, and a sky to match! Good and loose which also goes along with the subject.

Lol….I frequently miss peoples work Tessa, if I don’t look on the gallery every day. Thank you very much for your feedback. As I said in my first comment above, I didn’t want to do a collage! I didn’t enjoy it either so maybe my mood was projected in to the piece as well as the grime from the photo.

Mixed media and collage on gessoed mount board. Painted from a sepia photo of the old smithy in the village, long gone now of course. The lane, buildings and whole atmosphere of the scene was bleak and grimy. Attempted to keep it as depressing as it looked.
