The Glenlee

Comments

This has been on and off the easel since October, there is much wrong with it. I have left lots of things out, including the figurehead…..ships are way above my technical abilities. I even chickened out with the rigging!

A superb painting Fiona.

Looks great.

Beautifully captured Fiona - it has such atmosphere. What a lovely ship.

Remarkable. I’d be delighted to have produced such a great painting. The ship is terrific, but I love the sky.

Well this land lubber thinks The Glenlee looks brilliant, the rigging too Fiona.

Nice work Fiona, a beautiful ship. Rigging isn't an easy thing to portray, but you did a fair job. Nice work.

Super, Fiona!

A super oil painting Fiona. Really well painted with great atmosphere.

That look superb, Fiona, atmosphere too. I'd be very proud if I could achieve this.

Very nicely done Fiona . I am not a nautical type but I think artistically when it comes to rigging less is definitely more

This is beautifully painted Fiona. The masts and rigging are so delicately painted and the sheen on the water makes an atmospheric scene.

Wow this is fab Fiona 😍

Thank you very much everyone for your kind and generous comments. I appreciate your suggestions and ideas…..thanks again. There is interesting info on the Glenlee on Google, of her life and journey’s and some great old photographs of her in full sail, a marvellous sight.

You've got dreich perfectly, Fiona and the clydeside architecture earily peering through it, thanks for the history it sets the painting up nicely.

Well of course I’ve already had a preview of this splendid vessel, and made several suggestions for your next seafaring project! In general, a good attempt at what is undoubtedly a complex subject. The sky and land mass are excellent!

This is excellent Fiona - the details show great painting skill.

Wow; very impressive Fiona, and love the atmosphere you’ve captured here- A truly beautiful painting of a beautiful boat- Hope it’s framed and hanging on a wall… This needs to be seen!!

Whatever you say, it is very good indeed

What a super painting, Fiona. Well done!

Many thanks again for your continued support and encouragement on this painting, which is not in my comfort zone at all. Appreciate all your feedback.

This is excellent Fiona and well done for tackling such a difficult and complex subject. It’s all beautifully done , the background is really good and the reflections of the hull is particularly well painted. I just love the ship and all that rigging, and ropes etc.

Thank you very much Paul! I was hoping that you would see it, as we spoke about it last October when I first mentioned having a go at it. Got there eventually and not too bad a result considering my lack of knowledge……and not to mention talent! Lol.

Good job Fiona. IT’s great that you stuck at it despite being out of your comfort zone. I agree with Dave P I think a hint of rigging says enough

Martin, thank you very much for your observations, I appreciate your input. No more ships, or boats for a while!

An amazing painting Fiona

Thank you so much Cecilia!

So different for you Fiona but a cracking piece of work. I tried painting one of my sons RFA ships a few years ago and made a right dogs dinner of it....and there wasn't even any rigging to get myself tied up in knots on !!

Oh Fiona! You've done a marvellous painting here! You've managed that rigging really well. I adore the colours of the sky and water and the lovely softness you've acheived and the buildings are so well done too. Top marks all round!

Val, Diane…..thank you very much ladies! I enjoyed painting it initially, the sky, water and far buildings and then started to panic about the ship! I think I looked at it for six months before tackling the rigging! Anyway, it’s done, I can gesso over it now…..😂

WOW was my reaction when I saw this. Am I looking at Fiona's gallery??!! This really is wonderful and the atmosphere comes screaming through. Well done Fiona -it's remarkable.

Carol, hello! How are you, hope you are well. Glad you like it, it’s been touch and go and I’ve struggled at times. Glad to see the back of it! X

11”x9” oil on canvas. Built in Port Glasgow in 1896 the Glenlee has gone from a British cargo vessel, an Italian ship of mystery, to a sail training icon of the Spanish Navy, the Tall Ship Glenlee has adapted to many changes and names over its history. She has come home, been given back her original name and is now moored on the Clyde and forms part of the Glasgow museum of transport. It was a calm and dreich October day, was attempting to capture the atmosphere rather than the technical accuracy.
