Awaiting a Facelift

East Ayrshire, especially the Doon valley is rich in minerals, in 1848 a large eight furnaces iron works was built at Dunaskin, near Dalmellington and produced pig iron day and night. It employed 1, 400 people including many of my family in the late 1800’s who also lived in the shadow of the furnaces in wee ‘But n Ben’s’. This carriage not only serviced the iron works ....which closed down in 1921 but also the brick works which was built on the same site, that produced bricks until 1979. The kilns, chimneys, and sundry buildings are still there but in a derelict state and unsafe. Because of the coal industry that ran along side both productions they had their own railway lines running from different coal mines in the valley, the site is now part of the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre and renovates the locomotives and rolling stock.
