Love the use of the white chalk on the grey background. This is lovely Paul.

I love these old ruins. There was time, some time back when I could do these things, when I considered building a small ruined folly in my garden. A trip to a scrap yard ruined that idea, they had everything I needed…but it was SO expensive. I like your drawing.

Thanks Carole and Lew I appreciate your comments. Shame it was to expensive Lew , that would have been great thing to do , I can imagine you enjoy building and designing it .

I like that a lot, Paul. Good luck with your ongoing new found discovery.

And a lovely scene it is too, Paul!

A great first sketch Paul. Have fun with the toned paper.

Great drawing Paul, the combination of the grey paper with the black and white works brilliantly, I look forward to seeing more. A certain Mr Bickley introduced me to this brand of paper too, I wonder if he's on commission?! 😂

Exciting to try something new and it works! Carry on that man!

Good sketch Paul.

Really good and particularly on a first attempt

It's great to try out something new, and it looks like you enjoyed it - I like the Gothic window.

Thank you all for your kind comments, they are very encouraging and appreciated.

Something different, love it !!

A great sketch Paul and your limited colours are so attractive.

Great ruins, Paul - it's good to try something new - well done!

Really good use of the toned paper Dixie, look forward to seeing more.

Thank you for your kind comments Carole , Anne and Tessa . I’m really enjoying trying out the paper , it’s a heavy weight and excellent surface to work on , it’s becoming a favourite already .

Excellent work - I like this a lot.

Love your tonal sketches!

Thank you Andrew and Linda for your kind comments.

A5 pen and pastel sketch on grey toned paper. I’ve wanted a grey sketch pad for some time , chatting with Alan Bickley set me off on the idea as he uses it very successfully. This is my first attempt using it and a limited pallet, black pen, white and a mid grey pastel fir high lights , added the light brown for the wood fence. As I don’t normally work is loose a lot of learning from this and need far more practice.

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
