What a tree! Nice work Paul.

I really like this one Paul, your trees are wonderful and I especially love the figure on the left !

As always, unlike myself, you’ve taken your time to get the shapes and the colours right… a fine job indeed Paul!

Excellent painting.

Very well done Paul.

Many thanks folks for your very kind comments. I think when you have a passion for the subject it makes it much easier to do a painting or sketch , the main thing is understanding the shapes and nature doesn’t always conform to geometric shapes.

Really interesting and a good painting Paul

Well there you go I have learned a new word. Tree and estovers are super.

Thank you Heather and Sylvia for your kind comments. Sorry I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to the history of the British countryside and woodlands in particular.

Love these very animated trees Paul. Full of character and such wonderful shapes.

That tree is so full of character, and you've painted it really well.

Thank you Carole and Bobbie I appreciate your kind comments.

The red hat is a perfect touch. A picture that makes you look all around it.

Love these characterful old trees.

Thank you Elaine and Jenny I appreciate your comment.

What a cracker Paul! Love the way you have described the shape and contours of the tree with marks and paint.

Super painting Paul.

A super old tree, Paul and very interesting information!

What a great old tree and you’ve captured those colours beautifully. You’re not a nerd (well maybe just a little! ) and the background info is always interesting. You know your stuff Dixie!

Thats some tree Paul. At this stag a tree gives out a lot to the habitat it grows in.

This is excellent Paul, really beautifully painted.

Many thank to your all for your king comments I appreciate them .

Absolutely fabulous Paul and interesting to read your extra info too. Is it a Beech? I love the colours and the character of the tree. It's sad that many people have lost their connection with trees.

Thank you Sarah for you kind comment , it’s a beech based on one in the local woodland it’s several of old and ancients tree in the same area of woodlands. There are many fine examples of of coppice stools that were use by the local residents as the woodlands belong to the local parish and the poor and elderly were permitted to use it . This continues up until the mid nineteen hundred ,the local village is one of the most expensive places to live now as it’s on the doorstep of Cheques.

A beautiful old tree Paul, also great piece of information thanks.

Really lovely work Paul.

Nicely captured. I can see why you were attracted to the wonderful shapes and colours

Thanks Cheryl I appreciate you comment , tree are so beautiful all year round and made the landscape 3D .

A4 watercolour on Bockingford rough paper. Old decaying tree and old couple collecting fire wood. Estovers is the old legal term from the Magna Carta the right of a tennent to collect wood for house repairs and fire wood . Known in old English as Bote example fire wood = fire bote etc. I wanted to show all the colours of the moss and lichen and the decaying wood .

About the Artist

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
