You’re too hard on yours

You’re too hard on yourself Paul. I love all those lively boats and I think the sky is fine. A lovely painting to be proud of.

I have to admit it’s better now that I’ve toned down the sky’s about the brightest I paint normally. Thank you Carole for the confidence boost .

Oh wow Paul, that turned out really well. I like bright colors - they are wonderfully integrated here too. I especially like the sky and the corresponding reflections in the water.

A nice crisp piece with good colour palette.First rate.

Very accomplished handling of a very complex painting Paul. Very well done.

I really like this, I love the colours, they harmonise beautifully !!

A nice piece of work, Dixie.

Really well done Paul.

The sky is lovely Paul and so much detail in the rest of your painting.

Tanja, Andrew , George, Valerie , Lew and Stephen thank you for your very encouraging words.

Christine thank you we were posting at the same time , I appreciate your lovely comment.

I think it's much better than your descriptor Paul!

A complicated scene handled so well Paul. I think your sky sits well with the complicated fore and middle ground….they don’t compete.

Very well painted, Paul. I like the sky with the colours which are reflected in the water. Lovely busy scene. Happy Christmas.

I’ve already passed comment on this in a private viewing of this nautical scene. I like it, it’s a good bold watercolour and a difficult subject!

Thank you Heather , Cheryl,Fiona Linda and Alan I appreciate your comments , it’s certainly being worth posting a thing that wasn’t going to happen till Alan and Gillian commented privately. I did let the anxiety about the sky overshadow the rest of the painting , but I do see it differently know it’s finally done and posted .

The sky looks fine Paul, I think it's quite a nice piece.

Thanks Alan I think I might put the photo on the gallery as a before and after to demonstrate that a painting can be recovered.

Great colours Paul and an interesting piece.

Thank you Denise I really appreciate your comment .

A lovely scene Paul, great palette too.

A complex scene indeed Dixie, and I rather like your colours here. I wouldn’t know where to start on a painting like this and think you can mark it as another success.

Nice one Paul.

Carole , Russell, Tessa and Sylvia thank you for your kind comments. I have put the this on the forum showing my mistakes and how I corrected them .

It turned out really well.

Captured the complexity, and the colours are great...gives great atmosphere. Nicely done Paul.

Lynda and Gerry thank yuk for talking the time to comment I appreciate it very much.

Thanks Anth for your kind comment it’s much appreciated.

I think this has turned out a lot better than you realise. Its very good.

Thank you Jaqueline, I appreciate you kind comment.

A really good painting, Paul - well done with the complexity!

I agree with all the comments, the colours work well together.

Many thanks John for kind comment.

Paul don’t talk yourself down, this is such a difficult subject to do and if I’m honest I would probably shy away from it. I think you done such a very good job and the sky is fine, sometimes if you over do the sky it ends up competing with the focus of the painting. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished this is excellent work!👍👍👍👍

This works really well Paul. You are too hard on yourself. It is full of great details and the colours all work really well together. I really like it!

Thank you for your kind comment David.

Thank you Alexandra for your kind comment.

A4 watercolour painting of London Docklands set in the 1950s . Inspired by several online photos. I did this to see if I could do a complex painting A4 size I think I’ve succeeded. I’m not happy with the sky to be honest I started messing around and ended up with a mess the wet the are and took of a lot of the bright colours. I do t normally pain in such bright colours and found it quite unnerving also lost my way . Still nothing lost as I gained a lot from the experience.

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
