Hay Barges ( Stackies)

Comments

Nice information about the barges, excellent painting also.

Love the info Paul it sort of completes your story and lovely painting from start to finish.

Love your painting, also all the extra info about these lovely old Seagoesque barges! That watery mud is very good

Lovely watercolour painting Paul. 😊

Lovely watercolour Paul and some great information.

An interesting history, and an interesting painting that brings that history to life. It's very well illustrated and has a lovely atmosphere too.

Love the painting and the info, Dixie. I can remember seeing sailing barges on the Thames near Greenwich, this would have been 1946 onwards or I wouldn't recall them. The last knockings for these grand old boats.

Thank you David, Chris, Thalia, Faye, Denise, Seok, and Lew for your very kind comments. That must have been some sight Les and clearly left an impression on you . They were and still are beautiful graceful mode of transport , I wonder if we will ever see the likes again not the same but a modern version.

Super work Paul, love these old boats.

Thanks Fiona , I think they are beautiful looking and quite elegant on the water . I would love to sail in one, the only problem is I get terribly seasick even on a duck pond. I once was on the Condor catamaran ferry to Jersey and took ill in Poole harbour before casting off even.

I like your barges Paul.

Thank you for your comment David

Thank you for your comment George it much appreciated.

You and Alan paint quite a few of these, don’t you Paul. I’ve never seen one…perhaps they were more in the South. Nice painting.

Interesting info Paul and happy painting.

Really great painting Paul.

Thank you Marjorie, Sylvia and Carole for your kind comments as always the are appreciated. I think like Alan they are excellent craft and look so good, almost beginning to be painted. Most areas had their equivalent of the Thames barges Marjorie. I know there was the Liverpool Flat the Norfolk Wherry and of course the Dutch barge. Scotland as both England and Wales used a lot of small coaster delivering goods , coal etc to hundred of small harbours around the coast . All flat bottomed so they could beach or move in shallow water.

Once again Paul, excellent painting and narrative.

Many thanks for your comment Richard .

I like boats Paul! I like these too. I caught an interesting video on YouTube about 18 months ago. Someone who owns one of these 'stackies' 're-created' a journey with a load of hay, from Norfolk down to 'Lunnon'. There used to be one of these barges in Charlestown, Cornwall. A nice painting Paul, fresh colour; relaxing to view.

Thank you John for your very kind comments. I must look out for the u tube idio.

A bit bigger than a4 watercolour of barges awaiting loading with hay. A very common fight in the late 1800s and up until the 1940s. The name stackies was on a couple of old photos so I assume that was the nickname for them. Could be seen on the Thames travelling up to London , looking like floating haystacks. Two man crew with the mate standing on top shouting instructions to the helmsman . Hoped to get the effect of low tide just as the mud pushed through the water.

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
