Over the Top, Lads… by Alan Bickley

I like the way you have done this.

I like the simplicity of this.

Tribute to brave men.

Very to the point, Alan. Your drawing put my Dad in my thoughts. He was in the infantry and served in France, Belgium and Germany...fighting in many battles often at close quarters. When I asked him about the war he'd smile and say 'I had some great mates.' And that was all he'd say. I got the above snippet of information from my Aunt after Dad had died, and she would say no more. Your drawing could be him, and many other ordinary blokes swept up into that awful war.

Thanks everyone for your support, Lew, very close to home then…

Love it Alan.

A reminder of the lost generation that served their country and the many that lost their lives . . . A haunting image. I can't for the life of me think how relatives can sell the medals, so gallantly earned. My Grandfather's medal was stollen after a break-in, he was a gunner, a sure- fire target for the enemy.

Very poignant tribute.

Love this style Alan - it captures moment perfectly- such a powerful image.

Powerful Alan and the use of that red very emotional.

Caught the loneliness of the brave soldier marching on towards death or glory. And the wars still continue, after eighty years of peace in Europe, when will we ever learn?

Quite a thought provoking, moving piece.

Nice tribute Alan.

This poignant drawing could be my great uncle, Charles Napier Mitchell (MM and bar), who almost made it right the way through WW1. He survived the first few days of the Somme with a wound to his hand, and lost his life to a sniper on the Western Front in August 1918.

I think we all lost a relative or two in that aweful war. Well depicted Alan.

Simple but provocative Love it

Explicit and expressive in its very simplicity.

Your simple, but very effective painting is thought provoking and reminds us of terrible times in our history Alan

Lovely movement 👌
