Stunning Alan, very atmospheric and you have captured that heavy downpour, beautifully.

A great sky full of drama

Great sky - full of life and colour- superb Alan!

I love blues and greens that go towards yellow- this is lovely Alan.

This is really well painted Alan , I do like the bold brush strokes they certainly add texture to the clouds and the tree foliage.

This is really good Alan. I love the effect of the rain clouds and those blues throughout work wonderfully.

I like the mix of blues very much, and it's full of drama and interest.

Yes, that sky is the focus, I like those brighter bits of blue peeping through and the thought that some poor soul is catching it! Very effective, Alan.

Beautiful palette as always, love your brush marks Alan.

I'd like to try that more absorbent surface. Do you buy a bag of chalk dust to mix into the gesso?

Love those colours - beautiful.

Lovely big sky. Colours and great composition. Looks abit pastel the light blues. 💙 Lovely all round 😁

Thanks everyone for your comments, they’re greatly appreciated. Roger, welcome… it’s from Jackson’s - A S Handover French chalk, but I have it on good authority that Pollyfiller does an adequate job and is a lot cheaper! This is what Brian Ryder ROI uses, so it must be okay!

Wonderful dramatic sky.

Full of atmosphere and Seago! Love it, Alan!

Wonderful sky and so much atmosphere

I may have to try this base you are using Alan, it gives such a wonderful quality to the expressive brush work. A magnificent sky and understated landscape to compliment it.

Excellent sky and lovely colours Alan.

A very dramatic sky Alan with that cloud and passing rain storm.

Thank you, Alan. I'd been looking at John Peace's brushstrokes in an exhibition of his work at South Shields on Monday. There were some lovely marks, made with only a small amount of oil paint on his brush which had been "dragged off" by an absorbent surface on his board. A good reason to prime over some paintings I'll never finish.

Yes Roger, this ground does suck up the paint a bit more, but Seago liked this, layers dry more quickly obviously, but you really need to add a touch of linseed or stand oil in the final few layers - it does dry rather flat otherwise. I’ll definitely be varnishing after six months or so!

I love that lively sky!

A simple low horizon landscape which shifts the focus to the sky. I've ‘loosely’ based this oil painting on Edward Seago’s style of working, using the same palette and employing his bold brush strokes in layers, always more evident in his dramatic skies. I’ve prepared my ground with a mix of gesso and chalk, giving me a more absorbent base to work on. Seago used rabbit skin glue and white lead, but we can’t go along that route. Oil on board 40 x 50cm
