Ne'er Look Back
Every September, here in Ontario, the agricultural community hosts a major week-long event called The International Ploughing Match. In its early beginnings it was a competition on the art of ploughing with horses and using both walking and riding ploughs. Later it was expanded to include tractors. While ploughing still remains its core attraction the show has quickly expanded to become a very large agricultural trade show with people coming from every corner of the province to enjoy a variety of entertainments. I remember the first one I attended years ago. Located in a very large field surrounded by rolling hills the many acres were covered literally with hundreds of tents all flying pennants and flags in the morning breeze. The whole setting appeared not unlike what I would have imagined a medieval jousting tournament to have looked like – in fact this year they do have jousting! This painting of a team patiently working is a memory of that time many years ago.
