Some old Tudor by Robert Jones, Napa

He doesn’t look a barrel of laughs Robert…one of those characters you wouldn’t cross. But how good it is to have a play and just paint what you want and when you want - that’s a wonderful thing to enjoy. And it’s a good result!

Excellent work Robert , so nice to see your enjoying your painting and playing with the paintbrush’s . I always paint or sketch for me and have as much enjoyment as possible, not always as productive.

Excellent portrait Robert, he looks a dangerous man to cross!

I thought Henry VII straight away, you've really caught him here. No, he wasn't a barrel of laughs, and definitely dangerous to cross.

I like this very much. A very expressive face, he looks ready to tear a strip off somebody. Fine work Robert.

You’ve got the shadows working well for you, and some good colour variations and tones in that worn face! Good exercise and practice! I would have preferred to have seen a self portrait from life mind you…

Good playing Robert and I wouldn't want to meet him on a dark night!

You had to be tough and merciless to survive in those days... thanks for all comments. Alan, a self-portrait may come about one of these days, but the older I get, the less appealing a subject I become.

Your portrait has real presence Robert. I like it.

Keep going, I love seeing your work.

I like this very much Robert. Its expressive and has power. Yes a self portrait might be a great option and not sure why you find yourself an unappealing subject. Afterall rembrandt seemed to be fascinated by his own face and the older he got the greater the fascination. I find my own face very unappealing yet I've done some self portraits. You might even say my face is a bit rembrandtian so at times it's interesting to try to make myself look as bad as I really am ha ha. I haven't actually seen Henry 7 before. More familiar with images of Henry 5 and 8. He could almost be a pope from the renaissance. They tended to look quite severe. The one painted by velasquez looks a right battle axe .

Very glad to hear that you have some play in your life, something that your Henry seemed to lack. Good painting too!

This is a play-piece, in acrylic - VERY loosely based on King Henry VII. I just felt like having a bit of an indulgence: I could have worked on it a lot more, but that would have undone the play-appeal. So for better or worse.... 18" by 14".
