It's a fabulous watercolour, portraiture is particularly tricky in this medium I think.

Good job done here Marjorie, watercolour is far more difficult than oils for portrait painting in my view!

Simply superb Marjorie.

Mistakes or not this is excellent and I do agree it’s a difficult medium for portrait painting. I think you have done an amazing job particularly as it’s out of your comfort .

Terrific work Marjorie, and I like the areas where you've 'suggested' things...the hat, the coat.

Great work Marjorie

Terrific use of watercolour Marjorie: a very solid portrait. I have no idea who he is, and yet he seems familiar??? 🤔

Thanks all for the encouragement. Lewis, I’m glad you like the areas which are not defined though someone once asked me if I did that because of the eye problem I have ( glaucoma) - this person added everything, no artistic licence at all and everything had to be the “ real” colour.

Tessa….”if you need a friend”.

Beautiful and skilful work, Marjorie!

Brilliant Marjorie...

Amazing 👏

Super, Marjorie. I like the somehow unusual patterns.

Thank you Anne, Sylvia, Faye and Holger!

Well done Marjorie. Portraits are not easy in watercolour.Really like the colours in this.

Marjorie you have a marvellous result with your portrait. I love the less detailed areas and the overlay of washes which are beautifully transparent. Is it James Taylor?

Thanks Christine.😊 Fiona, are you back? Yes, James Taylor.

Good job Marjorie, I do like the unfinished version on the forum. Hope you are feeling much better.

Lovely watercolour Majorie - has a nice ethereal quality to it which I like a lot.

Great watercolour result. I’m terrified of w/c. as it has a mind of it’s own. The foreground is so beautiful where the skin merges into material and I particularly like the way the features are defined tonally. It makes me want to have a go at w/c again.

This is brilliant Marjorie!

Fabulous painting! Great portrait

Love it Marjorie, such character and depth in his face. A tour de force!

Lovely portrait work Marjorie.

Love this, Marjorie.

A soft and gentle portrait Marjorie.

Thank you everyone for your comments, it’s lovely to get such a response.

Delicate and wonderfully non photographic

Great portrait, love your watercolour style, Marjorie.

Dipping my toe Marjorie….lol. I’m getting nervous about picking a brush up again, terrified I’ve forgotten what to do! I could do with a kick up the bum….lol.

Thank you Martin and Jenny - Fiona, I’ve just virtually kicked you!

😵‍💫 ouch! Thanks for that Marjorie….lol.

Gorgeous work, Marjorie, love the brush strokes. by the way can I have one of those kicks!

Consider it done Willie! Ooh that hurt my toe!

Wondertful job Marjorie, something I rarely attempt in watercolour as it's so difficult.

Another cracking portrait Marjorie!

Excellent Excellent Excellent!!!

Another beautiful watercolour, Marjorie.

Thank you and appreciation for your comments Val, Karen, Skylar and Cesare.

Enjoying trying out watercolour again after painting for years with oils. Mistakes, yes, but also learning…i.e. you will lose transparency if you unthinkingly use an opaque colour! One lesson learned.
