Love these pen and ink doodles - more great characters.

Excellent

Definitely a family with troubles ... great characters Lewis

Terrific characters Lew, I’m working on a double feature on line and wash etc, dip pens come into the mix of course. Do you have a preference for a particular brand of nib, I’m finding that the quality between manufacturers varies enormously! Any relevant info appreciated…

Don't think I'll take that challenge Sylvia...too many of 'em. Alan...re pen nibs. Early days for me, I had a few ancient nibs. On revisiting dip pens, I bought some gear from Jacksons. They have a good, and bewildering selection. I bought a Manuscript calligraphy Style U nib...described as a 'fine' general drawing nib. I also bought a Manuscript calligraphy Style I nib...'medium/fine' size...general drawing nib. Both were good and may be all I need, in fact most of this pic was done with the medium/fine size. I bought a 300ml bottle of Jackson's Indian Ink, it had good reviews and is a lovely dense flowing ink. No doubt I'll buy more nibs, but at the moment the medium/fine at £1.10, and the bottle of ink at £8.70 may well serve my needs for years to come.

Absolutely great drawing Lewis for this merry band of characters ! Impressive.

If my doodling was as good as this Lew I would be extremely pleased. All the characters are superbly drawn, I think that’s more difficult with ink as mistakes cannot easily be hidden , you make your mark and that’s it.

Superbly drawn as always Lewis

Thanks Lew, I’ve been using a selection of Manuscript nibs with a certain degree of success - always good to hear what you’re using, appreciated!

Great use of pen and ink Lewis. Beats me how you don’t get any blotches anywhere. Would find it a terrifying medium to use. Being left handed my school books were a disgrace - full of ink blotches everywhere as in those days we used the old fashioned ink wells - not a biro in sight. This picture certainly tells an age old story so beautifully accomplished Lewis.

This looks great Lewis.

A fantastic group of dodgy characters.

Thank you very much everybody. Your comments are hugely appreciated. I've only recently come back to dip pens Carole, and I was expecting blots. Thus far I've had no trouble, I think the pens I used way back were mapping pens...which apparently are more prone to blotting.

Awesome work Lewis great drawings 🙂

Wonderful characters, Lewis! I thought that the best dip pens were willow twigs.

These are super Lewis but I don’t think I would trust many of them!

Great talent

Great stuff, Lew - as always. My dip pens are around 50 years old, and I'm running out of the very fine ones - the mapping pens - because they snap. Isn't it amazing that these pens are STILL available to us - defying the march of modernity, and still a great artistic medium, with - also still with us, and even better than before - such a range of fine inks? There are some things you can't improve, and shouldn't even try to.

A real trip down memories lane. Yes I used a dip pen at school - for writing and drawing. When I restarted the art journey and carried a sketch book ,I used the biro rather than pencil - think before drawing. Now I am back to using ink in my art - but with matchsticks in stead of nibs. I do have a collection of dip nibs , mostly from an art friend who died when in his 90s.

Back to the dip pen. I drew the top figure, then thought I'd make it a kind of dynasty. Aging king at the top, dodgy cleric, wimpy son and heir, devious general and wicked step-mother Queen. Things don't look good for the wimpy son. Nonsense really, but I find it helps if the doodles are about something.

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
