Witches Broom by Fiona Phipps

Love the colours and shapes Fiona .

In the woods is good - especially at this time of year, with a combination of colours AND the architecture of the trees. If you like painting trees, as you obviously do, then where better to be?

Very good Fiona as always

Top work again Fiona. I've not heard of this tree deformity, it's certainly well named, this wood is exactly the kind of place you'd expect a witch to emerge from.

Yes have seen this a lot on birch trees. Love the dry brush work Fiona and the beautiful palette.

Super work, Fiona and beautiful colours. Just as well stress in humans doesn't have the same effect :)

Another beauty Fiona-love the limited palette - it is so very effective

Very effective and all the feel of Autumn Fiona.

Love the freedom of this, very atmospheric

Nice one Fiona ,wish I could paint trees as good as you.

Lovely painting Fiona.

Wonderful painting and a exercise in how to paint dry brush, I know paper helps but you have it nailed! Really nice.😀

Must admit I hadn’t heard of witches broom, so I have learned from this as well as enjoyed your woodland visit! Lovely, misty, draws you in.

Nice brushwork and restrained colour palette.

A very striking scene, Fiona. Very alive and fresh.

Such an attractive painting Fiona.

Thank you all very much for your kind and encouraging words. I feel I need to have a change of subject before what I paint becomes static, even though I love being in the woods and painting trees! 😂

Fabulous work, Fiona you've fashioned a painting from a scene I would have walked past.

Spencer and Willie, thank you both very much appreciate your comments.

Very striking Fiona and atmospheric

You can never paint enough trees, these are very good. Love the subdued palette.

Christine, John many thanks for looking and commenting, very much appreciated.

Love your rendition of woods Fiona. Witches broom, I had a couple on my silver birch.

Beautiful tree, Fiona!

Carole, Cesare thank you both very much!

Thank you very much Maureen, glad you like it!

14”x14” watercolour on Saunders paper. I need to get out of the woods……but I can’t resist the pull! Witches Broom is a deformity, mainly in trees but other woody plants are susceptible. Usually in the tops of trees but this one has it at the bottom….which I haven’t over done so perhaps not that noticeable. Dense clumps of twiggy structures found on birch, cherry, hornbeam and some conifers.
