Very fine work - its such an interesting painting.

Well blow me, I've walked down to Towneley Hall at least once a month for the past 6o plus years and have never seen the painting you mention; nor can I ever imagine Lowerhouse looking like that. Ah days gone by when Cotton was king. I wish it still looked like that.

You've caught the feeling an old painting has, like a view into another world; the light is very attractive without in any way lessening the impact of the industrial buildings. It works!

Dear, Tom,Diana, and Robert, Thank you for your comments, I think we should try to paint more of our industrial past as it is a good subject for artists to keep a record of our past heritage before it is too late and then it will all be lost. The town of Burnley lies in a fantastic setting almost like in a bowl surrounded by hills on all sides with the South Pennines to the east like the ones in the painting there are not many towns or cities in the UK or in other locations worldwide that can match the kind of setting that this town lies in.

I wanted to do a painting of one of the earliest textile mills that was in the area of East Lancashire in the 18th century. This mill was in the Lowerhouse district of Burnley. A few years ago when visiting a large country house which is set in beautiful countryside on the outskirts of Burnley which is known as Towneley Hall and has a fantastic art gallery I noticed a painting of the Lowerhouse Mill that was dated 1830 but the artist was unknown, the painting was rather dark and sombre so then I just knew that I had to copy it and paint it in sunlight but not too bright with the sun low and in a mellowing light. I met the curator of Towneley Hall and mentioned I was copying the painting and asked if I could bring it in when finished to compare it with the original. Oil on canvas size 30" x 20". As a resident of Burnley I did meet the curator of Towneley Hall and showed the picture to her and mentioned at the time that I felt there is so much of the heritage of this area with many of the old mills still standing and there is still plenty of good subject matter here for any aspiring artist to either paint or draw.
