While staying with some relations who live in Syracusa Sicily a few years ago we decided to go north up the coast to the most remarkable monument remaining at Taormina which is the ancient "Greek Theatre" it is one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily, on account of both its remarkable preservation and of the surpassing beauty of its situation it is built for the most part of brick. I walked round the theatre several times in order to survey the best place for a picture to do a painting of it and thought this the best view. While there at the time Mount Etna was erupting and throwing up large columns of smoke and to me that was fitting for the background distance. I was able to get a picture of a man and woman dressed in traditional Sicilian costume so I included them in the painting. Oil on canvas 24"x 20".
