Waiting for some TLC

To my eye it's painted very well Paul, and I like these colours you've chosen as well 😉

Your boats are very good, as usual, Paul!!!

Clearly a working area and it has lots to look at. Very nicely done.

Nice job Dixie. A great subject. I get the point of doing the rigging freehand, that's a problem for me too. Do you use a straight edge or not? When I try that it looks out of place in my stuff, so I plump for freehand, wobbly or not. Yours look fine to me.

Art, David, John and Lew thank you for your kind comments I do appreciate them. Some are freehand on the larger barge and as it looked a bit wobbly I use a straight edge for some on the smaller barge. Frustrating as it is I hope to keep doing rigging etc freehand as long as I possibly can.

This is a wonderful painting Paul.

oh a fantastic subject, very good painting, i love all the lines and cords!

Christine, Denise and Tanja thank you for your very kind comments.

Great work Paul, I love 'busy' scenes.

Use a rigger brush that will get you rigging as you want it Paul. The boats are well constructed.

Thank you Russell and John for your comment I appreciate them. I do use a rigger brush John unfortunately it a problem with my hand that makes it difficult to do the rigging etc.

Love the colours and composition

Another excellent painting Paul, well done.

I’ve never found a rigger brush easy to use. This looks fine to me as it is. I don’t think it would look right if the rigging was too straight. I like your old boats Dixie, good as ever.

Look good on my wall buddy

Thank you Nigel , Stephen , Tessa and Martin for your much appreciated comments. I to have always found riggers a bit difficult to use Tessa , but as I’ve gotten older and with arthritis etc they are becoming more difficult. I honestly think as long as you van get the rigging reasonably straight most people will let it pass ,but unfortunately if you mess one up it’s tat one you notice not all the others.

Love this, the subject, your colours, and I would imagine that the rigging on such old boats would be a bit wobbly. Clever title too.

Some lovely colours in those boats Paul, and the rigging looks fine. I use anything tool available to get the result I want so if you need to use a straight edge , no shame there. It’s what you are happy with that’s important.

Sandra and Andy thank you for your kind comments. I’m not above using it different items to get the effects I want it’s all fare in the end no such thing as cheating I think.

Great collection of boats and bits really well painted

Like it (and that rigging is very good!)

Thank you Martin and Heather I appreciate your taking the time to look and comment.

i agree with Tessa Gwynne, it looks beautiful by hand as it is!!

An absolute beauty Paul…great job!

Interesting composition and really well painted, Paul. Think the rigging looks fine.

Very well painted Paul, great composition.

Tanja, Alan , Jenny and George thank you for your very encouraging comments I appreciate them.

The composition, colours and the rigging are all very good, Paul!

So much of interest here and lovely shapes of the rigging

Elaine thank you for your kind comment I appreciate thst you have taken the time to look and comment.

Gives a good feel of a lovely subject. I notice a nice background with the moored yachts adding to the atmosphere. Thanks for showing this. My favourite subject.

Thank you Mark , while I paint most thing old ships , boats and rusty vehicles are my favourite subjects. In another time or life I would love to be a marine artist, but need much more practice.

A great variety of interesting stages of repair required. The rigging looks perfectly natural and I think it’s a great little painting Paul.

Thank you Carole for you comment I really appreciate it.

What's not to like about a cluttered boatyard? Lots of interest here Dixie, love it.

Trevor thank you for your comment I really appreciate it , there is something quite special about a cluttered yard be it boat , scrap or farm .

Thank you Coral for your kind comment.

A nice group of boats well painted, The rigging looks fine to me. I know what you mean about rigging though, I think the sequence is a well loaded rigger brush and a confident swipe across the paper but that's much easier said than done.

Thank you Brian for you comment. I’m about to start intensive physio on my hands so hopefully I’ll be able to use them a lot easier soon , definitely agree regards the rigger .

23 x36 cm watercolour of old barges and boats awaiting repairs and restoration. From a scene near to the Pin Mill at Woodbridge in Suffolk old photos used . I have done a couple of variations of this scene from different angles and distance. Such wonderful old craft that just beg to be painted , well I think they do . Rigging a bit wobbly as I tried to do it freehand, not a bright idea .

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
