Silver Darlings

Comments

I called the boat Silver Darlings as this was the nickname given to the Herring scholes.

I really like this Dixie, and the name. It’s a lively painting and another storyteller. Also like the way you’ve ‘framed’ the ship in the distance.

Another good one Paul and another thing I've learnt.

Many thanks Tessa and Chris for your kind comments.

Good one Paul. Great sense of moving through the water.

think the trawler has a really interesting shape Paul and the figures working on deck bring it to life.

Many thanks Christine and Denise for your kind comments.I find the shape of ships and boats fascinating Denise and how different they look from slight changes the angle it’s viewed . It is quite a challenge sometimes to get them to look right especially the wooden rowing boats etc.

Your boats are always spot on and entail an interesting narrative Paul. Love the colours here.

Great narrative piece, love the title! A living history!

Great water Paul. And for showing me that I Am never too old to learn. 😀 Good figures on the deck.

Thank you Carole , Thalia and Richard for your kind comment. I am always learning Richard , I don’t think we ever stop. My young granddaughters often teach me things I had not known , surprising what a ten and five year old know these days, computer and IPad I suppose.

Always authentic and well painted Paul.

I love the way you have painted this trawler Paul and the fishermen. It's got me singing an old folk song called 'Shoals of Herring'!

Thanks Fiona and Diane for your kind comments . I don’t know that one Diane but it tend to think of When the boat come in .

Always good to see your boat paintings Paul, your love of them shines through.

This lovely and full of character

Thanks Katy and Heather for your very kind comments.

Like this, Paul, interesting subject with great feeling of movement, both boat and birds.

Thanks Jenny , I was a bit worried about the sea as I had quite a problem painting it due to the heat.

Really like this, that smoke is fantastic!

Thanks Carrie for you comment. The smoke was a special mix, waffle waffle , I used a bit of everything in the pallet and lots of water , then dabbed it a little with a tissue , I do like the dirty colour.

Watercolour of a steam trawler , leaving the herring ground for home . Imaginary scene , the boats were hard working and weathered looking. The identity number is made up but done in to reflect how they were done . The lettered denotes which harbour they originate from . I had problems with this as the heat dried the paint as I was doing the sea and it could not blend. Several attempts at rescue , think it’s ok but I only see the problem. Had to use acrylic white as part of the recovery .

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
