So big, so strong yet so vulnerable. by Paul (Dixie) Dean

Nice pencil work Paul really showing the texture on the trunk, the eyes are good showing the hint of the eyelashes that Elephants have, nice one.

Good work, Dixie. The eye is particularly good. Cropping the composition as you have always adds to the sense of size.

That's a really good sketch Paul, it will make a great painting.

Lovely drawing Paul and agree with your sentiments

Thank you for your kind comments, Malcolm, Lew, Linda and Heather. I have another elephant painting in mind Linda but I do agree this would be a good one, will keep it in mind.

Great sketch of such a magnificent animal, such soulful eyes.

Very nicely drawn Dixie - a fabulous big beast

Good on Paul. Great trunk and eyes.

Thanks Katy, Margaret, Michael and Richard your comfort are appreciated. I think the eyes are probably the most difficult to get right, and one of the first things I put in detail, much the same when I am painting or drawing owls.

You’ve captured the strength Paul and something else besides.....quietness.

Thanks Fiona, strange you should say about the quietness, whilst I took this from a reference photo with several elephants, this one was to one side and seemed of jusypt stood listening.

Great composition and close up drawing Dixie.

Wonderful how you got it the texture. Really effective shading.

Christine, Tessa and Ceri, thank you for you comments they are appreciated very much.

Beautiful sensitive drawing Dixie, really like how you have composed the image and the gentle eyes.

A4 pencil sketch, on cartridge paper. Done as a practice piece for a painting, not of this elephant. There is something relaxing and satisfying about drawing these big vulnerable animals. They mostly seem gentle and calm, but full of power an strength, sad that they re so vulnerable and slaughter for their tusks.
