Rare & Racy, Sheffield
This annoys me a lot. Rare & Racy was a much-celebrated shop in Sheffield's Devonshire Quarter which has been closed pending demolition of the entire site in the (un)foreseeable future. I signed a petition with thousands of others a long time ago to retain it and its environs, to stave off the demolition threat but to no avail. Rare & Racy was an out-post of obscure documents; music, the arts, architecture, the sciences, you name it, it had it. I remember the publicity given to the designs which would replace it, to "preserve the character of the site" (I'm paraphrasing) but how can you reproduce the smell of the place, the non-compliant staircase, the years of luscious decay, the history. Once it's gone, it's gone. Now it stands empty, the stock all sold off ( I was almost too late to benefit). Everything in this line and wash field sketch is still there but the premises are vacant; very sad.
