The Tour Guide, The Louvre
Among the hundreds of paintings I have produced in my time I count this easily among the top five most rewarding. Everything fell into place giving me a sense of almost complete satisfaction; a rare thing. I love the composition; the top lighting was enthralling and created some stunning effects; a soft-edged glare from the skylight producing ricocheting reflections - white light bouncing off the silken surfaces of the artworks and a cool blue in the burgundy wall surfaces; the texture of the floor finish with its muted reflections; the highlighted visitors in all their colours; the gilt frames casting mellow, dark shadows on the walls; so many symptoms to catch through careful consideration of pigment choice, water content, timing and techniques. A good day.
