Steam Gathering; Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Sheffield
This was painted at one of the working days held at the Hamlet from time to time. I pitched my easel adjacent to a picnic table to give me a degree of protection from a bustling crowd of families with children and steam buffs who had come to scrutinise the working engines on display. Minimal sketch but with attention to detail on the perspective of the main road roller. Contre jour to simplify washes and speed up the painting process, using carefully observed isolated whites of the paper to describe parts and save waiting for paint to dry. Watercolour with white Schmincke calligraphy gouache for the steam. A great day.
