I painted this scene sitting on a wall at the foot of one of the cascades around the Peace Gardens, watched by some inquisitive children who stared in respectful silence. When a scene is relatively complex like this some pointers can help simplify the sketch. First, on a flat site, though the perspective lines of the skewed buildings and thoroughfares on the ground will all meet at different vanishing points, each will be on my horizon at my eye level, which helps to set up the first shapes properly. Use whatever technique is familiar to you to measure the pitch of perspective lines. Second, get the main shapes down in the sketch in thumbnail fashion, that might be single large masses or a collection of smaller shapes which coalesce to make one significant element which catches the eye; it doesn't matter which - shapes are anonymous but their proportion and relative scale is what is significant. Third, use negative shapes (like the sky) to verify your decisions, they speak volumes
