We had an amazing guided tour of this, The Brownes House, in Cumbria, courtesy of the National Trust. Hand-written recipe books & miracle cures, Beatrix Potter drawings on the walls, a fascinating lineage and how they survived generation after generation on their wits and with hard work. A must visit. I set up after the tour with a 15" x 11" bonded block on the lower side of the sloping courtyard in less-than-ideal lighting, so after a couple of experimental thumbnail sketches (the actual prevailing light is at bottom left) I chose a false lighting direction to provide horizontal shadows from the right of scene to help break up the blank expanse of the yard. Simple fine liner and washes, using imported shadows under the eaves and elsewhere to provide explanatory modelling. Warm and cool blues, masses of white paper to catch the day and spatter from a tooth brush for the textures in the yard.
