Absolutely beautiful wet in wet work here Barry. I really like the subtle highlights on the buildings and sharp ones round the boat.

Forgot to say that I went to the exhibition which was wonderful but didn’t see any demonstrations. I have watched some on YouTube. Fascinating

So beautifully serene Barry. Isn't it good to be inspired by new ideas? You certainly made the most of this one. I love it.

This is a fabulous painting, Barry. Absolutely glorious. From the misty morning background to the beautifully rendered sea and boats. One of your very best.

Ps. Many professional artists advise not to use black as it is a 'dead' colour, what do they know? Shirley Trevena uses black a lo!

Love the gentle light in this

Thank you all for such a positive response I felt it was a good painting and you have all confirmed it. I think they did most of the demos on the first week end Diana, when I went the only one around was David Poxon. Used this way the Black works well Carole. Appreciate your comments Lewis I rate it up with my best as well. I think this will be the start of a few where I try and achieve that lovey light using wet in wet Karen.

Beautiful, Barry. With art we’re always learning, aren’t we. Your comments re spraying the paper etc was very interesting. I’m going to try it at some time. Thanks.

Lovely, it says just that, not a breath of wind, you can feel the freshness, 😃

What a great result, especially as you had no prior idea of the subject, that must be true art.

beautiful effects. Very atmospheric.

Thank you Seth good luck with trying it out but remember it doesn’t always work I have just tried one this morning and failed miserably. Thank you Linda I was lucky that the initial washes gave me that atmosphere. I have a lot of seascape stuff in my memory banks which helps Stephen, but it’s an exciting way to work but as I said to Seth be prepared for it to go wrong.

Thank you very much for your comments Dawn.

That's lovely work Barry. Great far and near effect you've achieved with the mist and good work with the subdued palette.. Boats never fail for me.

One word...Superb, Barry!

Thank you Jim, I know I’ll always get you with a boat or two. Thank you so much Thalia I really appreciate your comment.

I have to acknowledge the part International watercolour artist Ali Abbas Syed played in the painting of this picture. I recently watched his demonstration done during the International Watercolour Masters Exhibition at Weston Park and he started by making marks with black watercolour and the spraying with water and moving his board to cover his paper. I liked the effect and used it to start my painting, at the time I had no idea of the subject I would paint and only decided once I could make sense of the initial marks I had made. I saw a seascape emerge and the white of the paper on the right hand side shouted building being caught by the light. Once I made these initial decisions the rest of the painting seemed to fall into place. It was intense for a while as I worked wet into wet for about twenty minutes. Finally I painted the boats and darkened the foreground water with a wash.

About the Artist
Barry Hulme

I started painting in 2004, I am influenced by Wesson, Seago and many of the great masters, more recently I enjoy the work of Steve Hall, John Hoar and Alvaro Castignet to name but a few. I paint in a loose style and try to simplify as I can. The medium I enjoy most is watercolour but dabble with…
