Cumbre Del Sol – Plein air oil sketch. by Alan Bickley

I initially sketched out this scene in ink, which I posted a short while ago, just to get the feel for the composition – returning the following day to paint this same glorious vista in oils. Early morning with a warm day in prospect, so some inspiring strong tonal values and shadows to work with. I hope that I’ve managed to capture something of the Mediterranean light and colours. Oil on panel 30 x 30cm. I’ve bought back lots of small sketches from Spain, including Cumbre, and am currently working on a much larger oil in the studio, a higher vantage point and looking down onto the small secluded sandy beach.
