Well done Alan It's great to get out of the comfort zone and experiment lovely composition and the use of colour echoed throughout the picture David Harrison

Love this technique Alan great painting its still instantly recognisable as a Buckley.

I agree with Dennis this is most definately your style and quality of work Alan, but with a sense of reinvention.... it's fresh and exciting.

Wow this is good. Amazing how the colours work.

Lively, vigorous work once again Alan. Many years ago I tried pen work with oil pastels, they work well together, the turps make them a little like watercolour doesn't it?

Loads of interest in this fresh painting, with your distinct style stamped all over it. Great piece.

I notice you have used oil crayon on this one Alan - just been looking at Louise's recent posting. Is there an alternative to using turps to spread the in pastel? Turps and white spirit give me headaches so I avoid their use. I really like this painting for its strong and free us of colour.

Thanks everyone for joining in, always welcome. Julie, I haven't a clue on this sort of thing, but I am fairly certain that Robert Jones will have the answer, if there is one. I'll contact him and ask him to reply on this page, hope that helps.

Alternatives to using Turps and white spirit to spread oil pastel or oil crayon - any thinner will work; try Winsor and Newton's Sansodor, or Daler-Rowney's Low Odour Thinners. All thinners are toxic to some degree and should be used in a well-ventilated room. An alternative might be Zest-it, but as I haven't tried it I can't be sure. Works on oil paint, so should work on pastel/crayon - but try it on a bit of spare paper/canvas to be sure.

Great result for an experiment Alan.

yep, you created a nice and interesting atmosphere here, Alan.

It's so good to see people trying different techniques and yours has a really lovely result Alan!

A fine, lively study - will you work it up from this basis, or use it as the model, as it were, for an oil painting? I think it works so well as it is that I'd be loath to alter it, but that's not for me to say.

Thanks all once again, Robert, this will stay as it is, in this raw state so to speak, I am developing the idea of mixed media further and have done a couple more today which I feel is an improvement, will post one of them later.

Wonderful sense of energy, just love that and your use of colour.

Stunningly atmospheric piece, Alan. It really feels like I could be walking into a waterlogged and windy scene. Superb work!

Thank you Seok and Sandra, appreciate you time.

Thanks Gudrun, I try hard to produce different styles, it stops me from getting bored.

Oil paint and oil crayon with turps on grey board 12 x 16in. An experimental study using mixed media, needs more development as yet, but is quite an interesting technique.
