Do like that textured surface and the colour of the background wash Martin, an interesting painting with beautiful trees.

Very good Martin. Was it easy to use the fude pen on the wooden panel? I like the ink washes too.

Excellent painting, the trees are particularly well painted.

Great style and atmosphere here Martin! Very well done 👏🏼

Like this a lot Martin, a different technique has paid off well

Thanks Carole. I’d driven past these trees many times and always admired them

Thanks Karen. The surface is probably a little rough and hard for the pen and would probably damage its health with prolonged use, but it worked well enough on it.

Your overall pallet is eye catching and the way you have painted the scene is very nice. I read about the surface and medium you have used, something to keep in mind. Lovely work.

Thanks Dixie John and Heather. Much appreciated. I like to try new things. The risk of failure is higher but it keeps me interested

Thanks Carol. It’s worth a try!

Lovely style and colours.

That’s quite an experimental selection of materials Martin, with a great result! Very clean ink washes and great pen work! I would probably have added darker and longer shadows from the right hand trees, to break the foreground up a bit and add more of a solid ground… but we all see things differently of course!

Very good Martin, and I love the trees too

It looks great. Interesting background and use of coloured washes. I can see influences of the Japanese prints that influenced some of the Impressionists in this.

Thanks for your comments Alan. I had the same thoughts about the shadows. I wasn’t going to put any in as when I sketched it it was very overcast but for consistency with the final painting I think you’re right. After all it is the final image that matters isn’t it.

Thanks very much Cheryl Russell and Bobbie. I do have a soft spot for some oriental art and tried Chinese ink painting many years ago. It’s definitely where the colours come from

Great painting Martin - very Japanesey - love the way you've managed to get the height of the trees in the composition.

Applying the paint to the wooden panel has worked very well. I like the defined colours outlined in fine lines. Really lovely!

This is very striking and has a calm and beautiful look to it. I agree with Hilary, there is a hint of Japanese style here. I don’t think it needs shadows, works well as is.

Really like this Martin. A distinctive style of trees- lovely.

Love everything about this Martin!

Thanks so much for your supportive comments Hilary Spencer Tessa Christine Diane. Always appreciate them and glad you like the painting

Such a lovely style.

I missed this one Martin! It’s a beauty, love the simplicity of it. It reminds me of Jack Merriotts work.

Thanks Rachel. That’s a generous observation. I had to Google Jack Merriott but having done so I remembered his railway posters which I think are brilliant

The final offering from my little painting trip to the Yorkshire Wolds earlier in July which I’ve only just got round to completing. I tried a new surface for me which was a wooden panel to which I’d applied acrylic gesso. En plein air sketch in pencil then Fude pen with carbon ink and coloured acrylic ink washes. A3 size
