These pioneer trees are a must for the next generation of other species, Oak, Ash, Beech etc It takes many years for natural regeneration, as long as 18/20 years. This is wonderful to see.

Love this Martin !

A great mixed media sketch Martin.

I’m liking this a lot Martin…a very interesting sketch, I don’t have a Fude pen, what make have you used here, I might look into getting one.

I like this very much. Strong confident penwork and the limited palette add up to an excellent sketch.

I love silver birches (they are so elegant) and this is a very good sketch

Thanks Carol. Yes you see these taking over many places first. They are great fun to draw because of their colour.

Thanks Sarah and David. Appreciate your comments

Thanks Alan. The pen is a Duke. I bought it last May after reading an article in The Artist. About £30 from Amazon. I tried acrylic ink first but the flow was sticky so I use carbon ink which dries waterproof

Thanks Lewis Heather and Coral. Always appreciate your feedback

Thanks Martin! I’ll go and have a look and almost certainly buy one. I’m assuming I can get this carbon ink from Amazon also. I’ll come back to you if I need more info! Good tip re the acrylic ink, thanks…

This is really good Martin.

I very much like this - it would look even more fantastic on a bigger sheet of paper than A5.

When I think of Birch trees it reminds me of the lines in a poem by Vita Sackville - West. The Land….. --Birches, frail whispering company, are these? Or lovely women rooted into trees? Daughters of Norsemen on foreign shores........ Your painting reflects the words Martin……love it!

Thanks Stephen. Very kind

Alan the ink was also Amazon. I use Platinum. At nearly £20 a bottle not cheap though!!

This is great, Martin. Super pen work and there is a lot of depth in it. Very, very well done!

Thanks Robert. You’re right about the size but an A5 pad just fits my pocket and a sketch can be done quickly and before George wanders too far!

Fiona what a kind comment and the poem is absolutely lovely. Thank you so much

Thanks Mia that’s a great compliment coming from one whose pen skills are superb

That’s the ink I’ve been mulling over - cheers!

Another super drawing Martin, I love the looseness of the marks made by the fude pen.

Thanks Karen No problem Alan

Thanks very much Spencer

Very good work Martin, the ink work gives a lovely texture. I used to use a sharpened match stick for ink drawing but just use a rapido type now. Must try a Fude pen.

Thanks Stephen. I’ve used Rapidos in the past and they’re very good for fine lines. The Fude is much looser and varied but not so good for fine detail

Great sketch, lovely ink marks Martin.

It's nicely done.

Thousands of Silver Birches grow on Hatfield Moors and the footpaths through are like narrow alleys disappearing into hidden tunnels. On this path the trees are mainly young and skinny twisting this way and that. En plein air sketch with Fude Pen and finished with watercolour washes in studio on Clairefontaine Paint On Mix Media Paper A5
