This picture was composed from a photograph given to me by a friend: as a challenge. Given the photo’s detail of the gnarled wood surface, the challenge was what to omit from the picture. I gave emphasis to the twisted (tortured) shapes. Derwent “Graphitint” graphite pencils were the exclusive media used for the picture. My emphasis was on Gray- scaling using the water solubility of the Derwent medium. Some added light colour tint washes were applied, where appropriate, to add value to the composition.
