Dimensions: 9½ inches by 5 inches. The picture is an outdoor “sketch” of the Lynn Canal near Haines, Alaska which was undertaken to get my ideas together regarding tonal values, weather and light influences, and to determine an October colour palette for the scene. The weather presents a scene that goes from Zero visibility to 80% clear in a few hours with unpredictable lighting conditions. I wanted to capture the magic moments when the mist lingered in the hills and on the distant mountains. I needed a fast approach to image capture. I used the Derwent Graphitint pencils because they offered a muted colour range and because I could work quickly not bothering about drying time: the pencils are a water- soluble graphite medium. I did not use water. Using an “extra soft” eraser I could make adjustments as the mist revealed more (or less) of the scene and as the light on the water and mountains changed.
