Chéticamp, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada
The image size is 9.5 inches by 20 inches. The scene depicted is viewed from the sea looking towards the harbour of Chéticamp. A small fishing boat exits the harbour which is protected by a breakwater. As shown, the sea within the harbour is calm in contrast to the area outside the breakwater. Chéticamp is a fishing community on the Cabot Trail on the west coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia at the western entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The downtown area overlooks a large bay, into which the Chéticamp River flows, that is protected from the Gulf of Saint Lawrence by Chéticamp Island. The community has almost 4,000 residents, a large number of whom are Acadians and speak French natively, as well as English. Together with its smaller neighbour, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine, Chéticamp makes up the largest Francophone enclave on Cape Breton Island. The center-piece of the painting is St Peter's Church with its wonderful spire. The Cape Breton Highlands form an impressive background. This is indeed a scene worth painting: it has all the elements of interest including a typical Cape Breton fishing community, a Cabot Trail point of interest, and a welcoming community well accustomed to visitors and catering to their painting needs.
