The image size is 10 inches by 12 inches. The painting is on a canvas panel. The painting shows the tidal flats at Annapolis Royal where water from the Annapolis River in Nova Scotia flows into the sea within the Digby Basin. It is low tide and the morning mist is still down over the trees on the far shore. The debris on the near shore reflects strong tidal movement: some 8ft of difference between low and high tide. This painting presented some interesting challenges which are as follows: -the sun has not yet burned off the mist on the far shore so the light, which could illuminate the buildings and the trees, is still diffuse. This lighting effect mutes the tree details so one has to be careful in identifying diversity of tree colour and shape. - the water flow is from left to right in the picture: not a typical seascape. The water channel shown is narrow so the movement of the water generates wavelets - and white water - because of the unevenness of the channel depth. Later in the day, the water movement will reverse and fresh water will flow out to sea. - the foreground beach accurately reflects the diversity of colour in the rocks which, in turn, reflect the geologic diversity of the coastal area. My intention is to paint a picture of the harbour at Digby which is located some 15 miles from Annapolis Royal. So many beautiful scenes and so little time to paint!
