September announces Fall on the road from the Yukon to Skagway, Alaska. And with the season change comes a tapestry of colour on the high hills and mountain passes. For this picture I completed a sketch at the roadside, and took some photographs as I sat enjoying a picnic on a daytrip from Whitehorse (Yukon) to Skagway (Alaska). Derwent Inktense blocks give the range of colours for this painting. What I like about the Derwent blocks can be briefly summarized as follows: - Easily portable. Add a bottle of water and some watercolour brushes and ones ready to "hit the road" - Fast drying - Wonderful for glazing layers of colour. I work from light to dark as I would for watercolours - Forgiving if one makes a mistake (easily correctable) - Easy clean up. I use strips of white cardboard onto which I mix Inktense block colours. I find this method gives me accurate and predictable colour mixes which accurately reflects the painted colour on white watercolour paper.
