I can tell his little brain is working something out here Thea, great expression. Lovely portrait to add to your family collection.

Oh yes, I agree with Carole; he is definitely working something out. Again, that great capturing of emotions. I think you are right about the background too, this portrait doesn't need one.

Another lovely portrait,Thea, but I must agree with you about the background. But i wouldn't let it worry you!

He is a cutie! It's lovely with or without the background!

Love the expression on his cute face. Sunlight is revealed very well and I personally don't mind the background. Well done!

Thank you all very much for your lovely comments. I do love doing portraits of my grandchildren at all their various ages. I just hope that people don't soon start yawning when they see another one come up on their screen!! Thanks also for the various comments about the background - I am still a bit ambivalent about it. I would love to be able to do those wild and wacky backgrounds that some artists achieve, but they are clearly not 'me' so I should probably stick to what comes naturally.

The above comments are right! This is again a beautiful portrait, Thea. The background is ok in my opinion. Very well done!

Love his expression! I've been browsing your portrait portfolio and can see how much you have improved recently. Being able to capture your grandchildren so well must be such a joy.

Great piece, Thea.. love the expression and the sunlight on his face. The colours are wonderful too. Very well done indeed.

"Who do you think you are talking to ?" seem to be his thoughts, as I see it. Another winner,Thea.

I don't think the background is a problem in itself, although I'd be inclined to crop it towards the top. Beautifully drawn - reminds me, partly because of the yellow dungarees, of my (then) small brother, on a canal boat, gazing transfixed at the workings of a lock-gate. He wasn't trying to be defiant at the time, unlike Noah, but - well, he always had a defiant streak. Still does - if only I'd BULLIED him more...

Gorgeous little boy, beautifully rendered as usual, Thea! I love the spontaneity of your work and the cheerful colors. You convey so much personality in your portraits;

I agree with Seok, and I love the freshness and vibrancy of your watercolours

Lovely Thea! I agree the background probably isn't necessary but it doesn't bother me too much either. What a wonderful expression and I love his yellow dungarees! Another great success!

This is a typical vintage Noah expression which he gives you when you have said something he doesn't quite agree with. This time it was 'time to come out of the sandpit' - which didn't meet with his approval, so he blanked me. I rather liked the dappled sunlight on his face and his bright yellow waterproof dungarees. If I did it again I would probably either leave the background out or only suggest a background rather than fill it in as I have done. Watercolour on Langton 140lbs.

About the Artist
Thea Cable

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
