Lovely Thea. What mixes did you use for the skin tones?

This is lovely Thea, I like the one of Hector too. My grandson Joseph aged 8 was staying with me last week we did a portrait of each other with the intention of giving the competition a go. His was quite good, my was a disaster and finished up in the bin! Thank you for your comment on my cushions.

Portraits in watercolour are not an easy thing to do! I think you have done a great job with this painting Thea. Very good work!

Thank you all very much for the encouraging comments. I have a long way to go, but at least I've made a start. Larry, the skin tones were various mixtures of Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre. There is just a touch of carmine here and there and a little cerulean blue, although those are not used in enough strength to be really noticable.

It's lovely Thea. I love the clarity of your color and the economy of your brushstrokes!

Beautiful watercolour portrait, so well executed Thea.

Agree with Paul, watercolour portraiture is extraordinarily difficult to pull off - this is great for a second attempt (and pretty damn' good for a tenth attempt, come to that). Get the basic drawing absolutely right and employ a light touch seems to be the secret - and if I ever manage that, I'll be sure to let you know!

Thank you all very much for so very nice comments. Hopefully, I will get better or at least a bit surer of what I am actually doing. It's all very hit and miss at the moment!

Noah way you could mistake who this is! Keep at the portraits Thea; this is good.

Di, your'e sharp for this time of night!!

That's our Di for you - rapier sharp - even in the wee hours! Thank you both for such nice comments. It is nice to have the approval of such accomplished artists.

Thea I am so sorry, I seem to have missed your last two portraits and they are so good! I particularly like this one of Noah - unmistakeably your own style but so very effective. Lovely delicate tones - I bet mum is delighted?

This is my second watercolour portrait. It is of my four year old grandson, Noah. I am trying my hand at portraits, but it is proving harder than I thought and an elusive skill.

About the Artist
Thea Cable

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
