My wife and I were just getting into the car in my Mum's driveway after a pleasant afternoon with her, when I spotted this lovely rose growing out of her rosemary hedge. I'd seen it before, but this time it was in full bloom and illuminated by the late afternoon sun behind it, so I took a few snaps with my camera. I did this small watercolour the day before yesterday, and although it can't compare with the wonder of the real thing, I very much enjoyed painting it. The colours I used were Hookers green and Burnt Umber to get the dark background green, with May green as a basis for the rose leaves...altered a bit with a red for the darker bits, and Cadmium Lemon to make the very light leaves. The roses were Permanent Rose at different dilutions..from very pale to touches of very strong in places. The stems were again permanent rose, with some of the greens added in places. The final thorns were added in gouache at the end.
