Goodbye, Andy. by Robert Jones, Napa

A fine tribute, I’m sure he would be pleased.

Lovely sketch Robert, I like his gaze. I had the same dilemma with a friend called Alan. He hadn’t seen my portrait though. Although I had known him for a few years before he died, he was such a lovely man, that I thought that yes, I should show it to the world and all who knew and remembered him. I was fortunate enough to capture his friendliness and it makes me smile and sad at the same time when I see it. It’s somewhere in my portrait gallery.

Nice preliminary sketches here, something that I never do. I go straight in with paint… but this is a useful exercise and worthwhile in order to decide on the right pose!

2 very good sketches and I bet the finished painting was very good too. How sad though.

Very fine sketching Robert. I particularly like the alert, attentive expression on the drawing on the left. So sorry for the loss of your friend.

A poignant tribute, and an excellent sketch. Reminds us all, tomorrow is not given...

Sympathies Robert. Two fine sketches and a document to ones existence.A fitting tribute.

Robert regardless of the fact that they were the preliminaries for a portrait commission, they are really excellent drawings and I am pleased that you posted them.

Very good sketches Robert, and they give the viewer a good idea of the man. So they are a fitting tribute.

I agree with all the comments, you have caught a great sense of character .

Two very good preliminary sketches too keep the memories of Andy.

Lovely 😍 sorry to hear your loss ☹️

Thanks for all your comments: you know, until today I'd assumed that everyone made preliminary studies for their portraits - well, you live and learn: I might have known that Alan Bickley would charge right in with the brush, and still make it work; pretty sure I couldn't, though in all honesty I've never had the chutzpah to try it.

PS - he was a really lovely man: full of the worst jokes you've ever heard (actually, worse even than those) but their sheer horror still made you laugh; it was such a pleasure to see him every week ...

Very nice sketches. I wrote you a longer reaction, but it was "Rejected". First time that has happened.

These were preliminary drawings for a portrait commission of Andrew Corley, of Niton, Isle of Wight, who died suddenly a few days ago. The portrait itself was very personal to him, and, bought and paid for, was his property: I didn't obtain his permission to show it, and - well don't think I will. These A4 drawings, in pencil - graphite on the left, carbon on the right - will remind me of him and are offered as my tribute.
