Just had a look through your portfolio. The comments you've received are well deserved and I'm sure this one will be just as popular....It's a lovely painting.

Yes lovely colours and such delicate brush strokes show the feathers to great effect Paul and you always paint the branches and foliage so well

Another fantastic bird Paul, I can well understand how they take hours to paint. I love them all!

Yet another beautiful bird.

Your birds are simply fantastic! I love to see them in the gallery!!

Thank you everyone for your encouraging comments. :-)

Beautifully done - these birds vary quite a bit, I think: I've seen them in quite vibrant green (in summer) and more subtle shades at different times of the year, to the extent I've not always recognized them as greenfinches at all at first. I wonder what acrylics you use with the watercolour,by the way.

Hi Robert, I use Daler Rowney System 3 Titanium White for my bird paintings, but no other acrylics are used. Your right about the different shades of colour a Greenfinch can have, I've also seen them vary considerably other the past year I've been photographing them. I suppose the breading season say March - September onwards is when I've seen them with their best plumage colours.

Beautiful Paul, not only do you capture the birds outward characteristics you also capture their personality. The greenfinches that visit my garden have a tendancy to be bullies and I can see the 'toughness' in your birds eye.

Hi Fiona, yes they do have a 'tough' look about them that's for sure! I have to carefully select the right photo I've taken from dozens of poses. Some of the shots look very mean indeed! They are quite bossy but the main boss or bosses in our back garden is the Starlings, they arrive in packs throughout the day and throughout the year, hovering up all the food I put out, so I'm not pleased even though they are in decline. Thank you for you kind words but I've still got a loooong way to go.

Watercolour/acrylics on SAA paper 225mm x 168mm This one was a bit of a challenge. The ideal of it being a Greenfinch is not quite true by it's name, there are sooo many colours within this lovely bird, from browns, greens, blues, purples and reds to tint the colour and dullen in places. What a great challenge and very enjoyable! Around 6 hours work. http://www.devonartist.co.uk/
