Nice one Paul. Thanks for sharing.

Ps, forgive my ignorance, but when you say watercolour white, is that straight from the pan or do you use something special.😀

Thank you Tony. Hi Linda, yes I prefer to use the SAA watercolour Opaques White (tubed no pans), I find this has a lovely thick creamy consistency and can be watered down very easily if needed. I've tried other whites as well including Gouache but some tend to give off a blue tint. I do have a few news ones I bought last week to try out for a video I will be putting together comparing whites, so it will be interesting to see how they preform. When using watercolour white, you have to remember the more water you add the paler the white will dry, so it can be quite useful for both bright areas and dull sections of a wildlife portrait. Hope this helps, Paul

Thank you Paul, my first post for some reason hasn't been sent, it was to say I have seen your work on Etsy and I find your attention to detail amazing, I love your paintings, thank you for the tips on white, I have been using white uni Posca pens and gouache but the white on the Tiger really stands out but not in the way it distracts from the painting 😀

Such a beautiful big cat.

Thank you Linda, you are more than welcome. Thank you Sandra for your kind words. :-)

Its a while since I've seen your beautiful paintings of birds on here Paul but this tiger is another level. Amazing detail in the fur for watercolour and those eyes...…. Stunning.

Superb work Paul, wonderful detail

A big thank you to everyone's comments you are all far too kind. :-) Hi Val and Margaret, thank you as well. :-)

I am so relieved to find your work on this site!! I am also a lover of fine detail in watercolour and have tried to find other artists online who use watercolour this way but all I keep seeing is advice about “loosening up” and how this is the only way to achieve better work. Personally I don’t want a quick fix when I’m painting by painting loosely, I want to create realism with detail and I don’t care how long it takes to achieve that. So you can imagine how reassured I am by seeing your beautiful work. Bravo, don’t EVER “loosen up”!!

Hi Marilyn, thank you very much for your kind words. In my personal opinion I believe that there isn't a steadfast way to using watercolours. We are all individuals and have our own preferences on how we like to paint, so paint the way you would like to paint, not the way that it is presumed you 'should' paint. You are the artist so create the way 'you' want to do. Paul :-)

I just had to paint this amazing face, using a variety of techniques but also the addition of watercolour white!
