Trying After John Singer Sargent. Well Trying Anyway.

Well Denise I’m no expert on portrait painting and avoid painting them myself, but I do know what I like. I do like how you have done this and for me it’s a fine attempt, it far better than any tgstvyiu have done before. I’m sure someone will give you a point in the right direction, but if it wax mine I would be very pleased with the outcome . As with other genera , you will become better as you always work hard at your paintings.

Sorry for the typing mistake, it should read any thing you .

I like much this portrait from the great JSS. It is a good practice and you have done it very well.

I recognised the influence straight away so well done. I really like this.

You've done a good job here, Denise. You should be very pleased with it.

This is really good Denise: well done!

Really like this Denise. You have definitely captured something in the eyes.

Fab Denise. Your like a super machine that can do anything ❤

All your comments are very encouraging, they really have made me happy because I find portraits difficult and know I have a long way to go. Many thanks Paul, Cesare, Gudrun, Dennis Lewis, Linda, Carrie and Faye.

Love your enthusiasm to tackle anything and I think you’ve painted this extremely well Denise.

Full marks Denise! Those eyes are really looking at us. You seem to have done everything right, I hope you enjoyed the process. Flesh tones look good too, everything is harmonious in the painting. Look up the Zorn palette ( artist Anders Zorn) for flesh tones.

The 'original' is one of my favourite paintings and you have more than done it justice Denise, I especially like how you've captured the reclining pose and how her head nestles into the pillow.

Well tried…great.

Very well tried

You’ve really done an excellent job of this.

Excellent Denise, a good representation indeed. Yes, the Zorn palette is difficult to master but worthwhile.

Well done that girl! Fabulous result Denise, her eyes are mesmerising.

This is lovely Denise. Well done!

I am truly overwhelmed at how kind your comments have been, thanks Carole, Marjorie, Russell, Sylvia, Diana, Alan, Fiona and Louise. Marjorie it was your comment on a post that made me take a look at Sargent's work and I'm glad I looked at it today and found this.

Much appreciated Carole.

Denise, this is amazing!!! Really well done x

Good job, Denise - the direct gaze of the eyes really draws you in.

Done a great job Denise, it’s not easy at all

I think you've painted this beautifully Denise, it stands alone without any reference back to Sargent.

Thanks very much Diane, Dympna, Jenny, Romila and Heather.

Boldness be my friend!. Really well done Denise and you can't do better than J.S.S for a teacher.

WOW…..this is a beautiful portrait, Denise. I can see the influence clearly.

Thanks so much Jim and Ellen and you are certainly right about J.S.S, Jim, I will be looking at more of his work.

You’ve really captured this- really good painting

That is an excellent attempt at one of Singers portraits Denise.

Much appreciated Rachel and Val.

For reasons with which I shall not bore you, I seriously overslept twice this week, and didn't see this; by the time I did, you had so many comments that I thought why add to them? But I'm going to - this is seriously good; don't worry about JSS's palette if you don't want to, you've got lovely, delicate skin tones here and have captured the sitter's pensive look.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Robert, I really appreciate it as and it helps me know, I'm going in the right direction.

Excellent, Denise, most of us know how difficult water colour is, especially when painting a portrait. As for this one being a copy of a Sargent original, that of course is how artists such as Degas trained - copying for a full twelve months or more, doing nothing original. I have tried water colour portraits. If I can find one, I'll put it on so you can see how good you are!

Your comment is much appreciated John, I look forward to seeing your portrait if you can find it. I think this idea of copying is a good idea and I shall try it for a few months while I am trying to learn how to do them as portraits are my worst nightmare but I still want to learn the process.

Those of you who know me, know I am hopeless at doing my own portraits. A member put a copy of a portrait done by Sargent and another member recommended in his post that it is a good way to learn. Today, l trIed a portrait of Alice Runnels James. I know it was bold but this is it. I didn't do the whole painting, it's not done from a tutorial just from eye. I'm not use to mixing skin tones and probably should have looked at what palette Sargent might have used. Can't really judge how I've done.
