Better in my head
Comments

I know your not happy with them Lew but to me they are superb figures and your skill show through. I do understand how frustrating it is when what is in your head doesn’t transfer to the paper. You are such a good craftsman that nothing but perfection will please you , your so called mistakes , mess ups are far better than my best and are a delight to see , just keep them coming good , bad or whatever.

Thanks Dixie. I like some bits of all these pics, or I wouldn't have posted them. It's just that they didn't work out as I'd hoped. This is nothing new, it happens all the time.

Couldn't agree more with th comment made, they're great Lew, keep them coming

They look great, Lewis, it's difficult to be happy with everything and we must experiment. I'm rarely happy with anything I do, so I know how you feel.

It can be frustrating when an idea doesn't work out but your characters Lewis are always pleasing and good to look at.

Your creativity and talent always comes to the fore Lewis.

They all look marvellous to me Lewis. But dissatisfaction with our work is not necessarily a bad thing. Being self critical helps us improve and move on.

You are your own worst critic Lew. As for the rest of us, just keep them coming, please.

I always think your work is incredible. You have nothing to worry about. You care which is great and we all go through it. 🙂

You're a brave man to show your "failures", or "very nearly got there" pictures. I wouldn't describe any of these as failures, though do see what you mean about the larger one: I see it, but I know I couldn't have done it! Yes, if only we could translate what's in our head effortlessly to the surface we're working on, but something always gets in the way, somehow. I like your Toulouse Lautrec; not so keen on the Sherlock picture, at least by comparison - I think because the character that you usually capture in your drawings isn't quite there, in either face: but the idea's good; sure you'll come back to it and triumph. Criticizing your work is like taking a spade to a soufflé, mind!

They look marvellous to me lewis

Brilliantly drawn and so much to look at as always, I really like the Gothic Fantasy.

I really agree with the views of others Lewis. They are superb illustrations and are great pieces of work.

Thanks for all your very encouraging feedback, I know it's not unusual to have varying levels of satisfaction/dissatisfaction about your work. I just seemed to have a clutch on the negative side. In all these pics there are bits I like, but not the whole shebang. Still fairly normal.

The familiar thought, pictures are always better in your head. Top left a version of the Sherlock story 'Red-headed League'. Should have been all colour OR mono, on the right I put a red filter over original. Better, but still don't like it. Large pic on right...supposed to be Gothic Fantasy...it should be all caricature OR all realistic. It isn't. Hoping it would grow on me. It hasn't yet. Bottom left was going to be cartoony pic of Lautrec in Moulin Rouge...went off the boil and wrapped it up.

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
